This October 4th is News Engagement Day. The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication dedicated this day to making news, "…a national priority again [where] everyone is encouraged to read, watch, like, tweet, post, text, email, listen to or comment on news."

For News Engagement Day, I went to Southern Methodist University and spoke to a digital journalism class about data journalism, or using numerical data to find trends and uncover any cause and effect through quantitative measures. Not only did I explain how I hope to advance data journalism, the class was given an assignment: using baseball data, who should the Texas Rangers root for in the American League Wild Card game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays? In other words, which statistics suggest the Rangers have a better chance to beating once the wild card winner advances to the ALDS? The students then shared their research.
